"Milling" Around Milford & Spekes Valley |

Docton
Mill Gardens are situated in a stunning valley 1000 metres from the North
Devon Atlantic Heritage coast. There is a delightful walk from Lymebridge
and Milford through Spekes Valley, on the tip of the Hartland Peninsula.
Docton Mill is just down stream from the famous Spekes Mill Mouth waterfall
and the beach. If you have walked "over
the top" from Hartland Quay along the coast path, Docton Mill
Tearooms will make a pleasant break for refreshments, light lunches or cream
teas. There is an easier route, by car however, from Bideford or Bude via
the A39, Atlantic Highway. The Gardens are open daily and are particularly
vibrant in the Springtime when full of Narcissi, Primulas, Camellias, Rhododendrons
and Azaleas with Bluebells and Ransoms covering the woods. In the Summertime,
the Herbaceous border and Rose bank come into bloom as seen in the photos
featured which were taken on a visit in June 2008. This was a special day
when fundraising and flora came together on a "Gardens for the Lifeboats"
open day. What a great way to enjoy spectacular surroundings whilst raising
much needed funds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Also included
are photos of the walk down to Spekes Mill Waterfall from Milford taken
on the 17th April 2010 on the day the Swallows arrived (Visit our blog North
Devon Coast and Country Chronicle -
Swallows and Waterfalls). Useful Links: Docton Mill Gardens Website. Click here for Local Maps Clovelly & Hartland OS E126 Directions: From Bideford A39, follow the tourist signs to Hartland and Stoke. Take the left turn for Elmscott just before you reach the red telephone box. |
