I love spotting the changing seasons where I live in North Devon from the first snowdrop in February, the ladybird that heralds the first day of Spring, the return of the house martins in April, the bluebells in May and so on, you get the picture! I count myself lucky to have easy access to both coastal trails and the countryside footpaths which meander through rural farmland flanked by ancient Devon hedgerows teaming with wild flowers, birds, butterflies and insects. My husband and I have enjoyed many years walking in the open air in Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter taking pictures of little known and remote places around Bideford Bay and Exmoor. My web site the North Devon Focus is devoted to this corner of England. My favourite wild places are Clovelly, Peppercombe, Hartland Quay, Welcombe, Westward Ho! beside the Atlantic Ocean and exploring Exmoor National Park including Doone Valley, well known for its association with the novel "Lorna Doone" by R.D. Blackmore.
The North Devon Focus has been developed by Pat Adams who has lived in North Devon for over thirty-five years. In the past she has worked freelance on established local business and tourism based publications and co-ordinated the advertising sales and publication of North Devon's No.1 Annual Holiday Magazine, the "North Devon Scene" from 1989 to 2005. This web site is non-profit making and self-funded and aims to promote the coast and "country" side around the Port of Bideford, paying particular attention to the many picturesque villages and hamlets in the Torridge District and Bideford Bay area. We hope it will encourage prospective visitors to the region and be of benefit to those living locally. We have featured photo tours of Bideford, Parkham and the surrounding areas including Abbotsham, Alwington, Horns Cross, Ford & Fairy Cross, Buckland Brewer, Bucks Mills, Clovelly, Hartland and Woolfardisworthy together with the popular tourist spots of Appledore, Croyde Bay. Instow, Woolacombe and Westward Ho! We intend to focus on other areas at a later date so please let us know if you would like your town or village to have a page on this site. Working on a "Now and Then" theme we aim, where possible, to include some historical information about the area as well as promoting places of interest, activities, current local events and community projects. Check out North Devon Tourist Information to see just some the places to visit and things to do. Without doubt, the best way to explore the area is to park the car and walk, our page profiles have been designed as a "Coast & Country Picture Tour" which we hope reflects the individual charm of our local villages and North Devon's unique heritage coastline. North Devon is an area of outstanding natural beauty, a popular destination for families and those who enjoy the great outdoors so we have also featured a number of walks and nature trails including Exmoor National Park, the Southwest Coast Path and the Tarka Trail. We hope the site will also be of educational interest and we have highlighted areas of special interest and images of seasonal flora and fauna. North Devon is well known for its many traditional coast and country events and we hope the special features on Appledore Arts Festival, Bideford Music Day, Woolsery Fayre and the Woolsery Agricultural Show capture our wonderful community spirit. We now also post regular articles and press releases on the North Devon Coast and Country Chronicle Blogspot. and community Facebook Page. Please Click here to read all about the Clovelly Crab and Lobster Festival. We are continuing to develop this site with emphasis on the area being an ideal base for touring North Devon so if you are an accommodation provider make sure you are included in the North Devon Focus Places to Stay listings. If you have a charity project, school or church fundraising event post it free on the Coast and Country Chronicle "Community Calendar" so everyone can read about it. You may also use this free service when promoting live music events and art & craft exhibitions.
NORTH DEVON FOCUS ARCHIVE- The photographs included on this site are by Pat Adams with contributions from Brett D. Adams and Brett Adams using both standard and digital camera equipment. Images using standard camera equipment are stored as prints with digital versions on Cd Rom. The North Devon Focus photographic chronicle started in 2002 when the Kings Troop came to Bideford on holiday. I was given a Minolta to capture this very special occasion and one of the the highlights of the week was "shooting the horses" as they galloped towards me on Westward Ho! beach. We changed over to digital in 2004 and have built up a library of photographs for this area nature and wildlife through the years and our photographs have been used in brochures, on the web, in magazines, educational books and newspaper features both here and abroad. As volunteer photographers we played a small part in the English Heritage's Images of England Project which aimed to create a "point in time" record of the 370,000 listed buildings in England covering every town and village in the land. The project started before the digital revolution, traditional film was used to capture these unique buildings then processed for use on the website.
